When pollution forces Delhi authorities to close all schools

Air pollution is a problem that currently affects many cities around the world. In the Indian capital, Delhi, it is currently at a particularly high level. As a result, the authorities had to close all schools and higher education establishments indefinitely.

Apart from schools, other types of activity have also been banned. Construction work, for example, was halted until November 21. Only projects concerning transport and defense are authorized. Of the eleven coal-fired power plants in the city, only five are licensed to operate.

Air pollution has worsened a lot since the feast of Diwali. Today, a toxic haze that is particularly harmful to the lungs can be seen over the city of Delhi.

Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world

The Air Quality Index (AQI) indicates good air quality for a value between 0 and 50. When this value is between 51 and 100, the air quality is considered satisfactory.

On Tuesday, November 16, this value was close to or even greater than 400 in several districts of Delhi, which can be considered “serious”. The city’s PM2.5 levels are thus much higher than the levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Being tiny particles, PM2.5 is known for its ability to clog the lungs.

Delhi today happens to be the most polluted capital in the world. Several factors are involved, including emissions from vehicles and industries, but also climate and dust. Fires set by farmers in neighboring states make the situation even worse in winter, and there have also been fireworks fired during the Diwali festival. Weather conditions also have a role to play. By its low speed, the wind only accumulates more pollutants in the lower atmosphere.

Urgent measures for an emergency situation

In order to resolve the pollution problems, the Supreme Court of India ordered state governments and the federal government to take “imminent and urgent” action. In addition, a meeting led by the Delhi Air Quality Management Commission was held after the hearing and emergency measures were taken.

Other measures were announced in addition to the closure of schools. For example, trucks that do not carry essential items are banned in the capital and other neighboring states until November 21.

Homeworking has also been encouraged for 50% of the employees of private companies in the Delhi area.
