‘Jazz Noir’, a biopic about Chet Baker, is released

(ANSA) – MILAN, 19 NOV – The film ‘Jazz noir – Investigation into the mysterious death of the legendary Chet “, the biographical film dedicated to Chet, is not so much an investigation into the mysterious death of the great trumpeter as an immersion in his demons Baker, which arrives in about eighty Italian cinemas from 22 to 24 November with Wanted Cinema.

The film, signed by Dutch director Rolf van Eijk, opens on the sudden death of the jazz icon, who fell from the window of a hotel in the red light district of Amsterdam on 13 May 1988, and retraces his last days of life, at the search for the truth about his end: did he fall or jump? Was it an accident or was he pushed? But this is only the apparent trace of a noir that, through the parallelism between the life of detective Lucas, who investigates the case, and that of the musician, focuses on the inner torment of the voice of ‘My funny Valentine’ and on his drug addiction.

It is the English actor Steve Wall (also frontman of the band The Walls and The Stunning), to interpret Chet Baker, with his drawling voice and the uncertain walk that drags himself through the decadent alleys of Amsterdam and transforms himself on the stage of smoky jazz club. Wall took trumpet lessons and worked on the voice so that it was more nasal: “I already knew Chet Baker, I had some albums of his, but to prepare me for this role – he says – I looked for everything related to him, books, interviews and videos. of concerts. I loved this quest. I had never played the trumpet before, but I took lessons while filming, I also learned fingering and breathing, so it feels like it is really playing. We wanted it to feel absolutely real, so that even a trumpet player watching the movie you think I’m playing. I spent a lot of time working on the sound of his voice and his accent. ” (HANDLE).
