Instead of the usual Christmas tree in Ukrainian houses, they put beautiful products made by hand from straw and wood. This decor is back in fashion

Curated guide Hey Guide, which was launched by Public Kitchen agency, together with Ukrainian Folks released a joint collaboration – collection of Ukrainian traditional decor elements.
The co-authors went to Smela in the Cherkasy region, where they visited a unique school of folk crafts: straw weaving, pottery, vytynannya (tenderloin), folk toys.

As a result, we managed to collect unique ancient traditions of decorating Ukrainian houses for the winter holidays.
Last year, for the holidays, I decorated my house with paper stars, such as are used everywhere in Scandinavia. And a few weeks later Nastya Ivchenko gave me a straw spider. I hung it in the living room and admired it all day, and by evening I removed all the stars. They seemed to me sham and not at all valuable, because in the middle of the room there was a real treasure. And then I thought about how I would like the houses of friends to be filled with just such decor and content. I am very happy that this will become possible this year, – said Zhenya Skibina, co-founder of Hey Guide and Public Kitchen.

The collection includes pyramidal spiders, star spiders, straw grasshoppers, stars and angels, didukhs and candlesticks made of carved wood. All these decorative elements are important among the people. For example, a pyramidal spider is a model of the Universe, which should take negative energy from the house. Such a spider comes from Galicia, where it has always been an analogue of a Christmas tree. Traditionally, the Christmas tree was not placed in Ukrainian homes. – it was a tradition brought from Germany during the Soviet Union.

I came to the conclusion long ago that traditional Ukrainian crafts can get a second life and integrate into the life of modern Ukrainians. They have everything for this: a special style, many talented masters throughout the country who preserve and continue the tradition, and all this is just very, very good, you want to see it and touch it. This common collection is our tribute to folk decorating art and a visual selection of what a real Ukrainian New Year style is, ”commented Nastya Ivchenko from Hey Guide on the collaboration.
