Music, at the Maggio Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra

(ANSA) – FLORENCE, 10 DEC – Concert on 11 December at 8 pm at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence of the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (Russia), led by maestro Valery Gergiev who returns to the podium on the Arno in six years after the last time on May 13, 2015, at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra, he conducted three symphonies by Dmítrij Šostakóvič.

On the bill a rich symphonic program: opening the suite from Romeo et Juliette by Sergej Prokof’ev, Il mandarinoangelo, op. 19 by Béla Bartók and, in conclusion, Petruška by Igor Stravinskij. At the end of the concert, on the stage, the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella will offer Maestro Gergiev the Keys to the City.

Maestro Gergiev, explains the theater, is one of the most authoritative figures in the world in conducting: a stable presence in the billboards of the most famous opera houses, concert halls and festivals in the world, he has collaborated with the major orchestras including si they remember, among others, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Filarmonica della Scala, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bayerischen Staatsoper.

Winner of numerous awards and decorated with the highest artistic honors of Russia, he has a vast discography for Decca Music and Deutsche Grammophon.

He divides his repertoire between operatic and symphonic, with a strong predilection for the authors of his country, including Sergej Prokof’ev, Michail Glinka, Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij, Aleksandr Borodin, Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakov, Dmítrij Šostakovič.

The maestro also links his name to that of the Mariinsky Orchestra and its homonymous theater since 1978, becoming its artistic and general director in 1996.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, making its absolute debut on the stage of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and formerly the Kirov Orchestra until 1992, is one of the oldest musical ensembles in Russia which has its roots in its history since the end from the 18th century, when it was founded under the name of the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra.
