Matrix Resurrections, a return between nostalgia and tradition

When it comes to MATRIX RESURRECTIONS, the fourth episode of the saga, the critics, generally lukewarm in using a certain terminological paraphernalia, put their hand to metaphysics and do not worry too much about citing Jean Baudrillard, Luddism, metaverse and above all transition (they lack the Buddhism appeal and initiation). Yet, if you look closely, in this umpteenth episode, inevitably nostalgic and perhaps even too cerebral, there is also another significant element: the elaboration of mourning. In fact, in cinemas from January 1 with Warner Bros Pictures, comes the fourth chapter of the science fiction film saga interrupted almost twenty years ago, in 2003, with the last episode of the trilogy signed by the sisters Lana and Lilly Wachowski, to those still times the brothers Larry and Andy. After such a big thing as the transgender transition and a bereavement, why is it the only Lana to direct the new film starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, aka Neo and Trinity? She explains it thus: “My father died, a friend of mine died shortly after, and soon after my mother. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of pain – says the director -.
I had never experienced it so closely, I knew their lives were about to end, yet it was really hard. I couldn’t have my mother and father back, but suddenly I thought of Neo and Trinity, probably the two most important characters in my life. It was really comforting to bring these two characters back to life. That’s what art does and that’s what stories do: they comfort us “.
Returning to MATRIX RESURRECTIONS the question is always the same and it is ancient: is the reality I live in an illusion that confuses me and hides the real one? To get out of this dilemma, world-renowned game designer Thomas Anderson / Neo will have to choose to follow the White Rabbit once again. In short, the elected will have to understand once again which path to take and which pill to ingest: blue or red? But this time around he will also try to find the love of his life, the iconic warrior Trinity who is now Tiffany, wife and mother of three with a passion for motorcycles. In MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Morpheus also returns, this time played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (and no longer by Laurence Fishburne) who has always been driving for Neo, and Niobe, with the face of Jada Pinkett Smith, a fierce General who now takes care of the well-being of the his people despite their distrust of Neo. Among the new entries, however, Jessica Henwick in the role of hacker Bugs, the White Rabbit in search of the chosen one, while Jonathan Groff is Smith, the shrewd business partner of Anderson, and Neil Patrick Harris is the Analyst, the therapist of Thomas. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves explained what prompted him to be part of this new chapter of the franchise. “When Lana Wachowski contacted me, she explained to me that she had a story centered around the characters of Neo and Trinity,” said the 57-year-old actor, who was “shocked” after watching the film. . Basically Neo is given a second chance in life. Something that also happens to the only person he has ever truly loved. The depth behind why this film was made is precisely that it is a story of love”.
The US critics, however, received the film lukewarmly.
Those who attacked it did, as in the case of CNN, saying it was too complicated and ultimately disappointing, others spoke of “self-referencing”. On the other hand, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Indiewire who defined MATRIX RESURRECTIONS at the same level as the first, a film that does not add much, but still fails to ruin what has been done in the past.
