REPORTAGE

It is now a known fact: the Covid has damaged the mental health of the French. Four in ten people believe their depression has worsened following the first lockdown, according to a study. To combat this scourge, a national suicide prevention number was launched on Friday, 31 14. It is the CHR of Lille which has been appointed to be the national pole in charge of the development of this free number.

Defuse crisis situations

“If you are calling me today, it is because you need help”, explains one of the respondents from the CHR in Lille over the phone to one of the people in distress. All are caregivers who have been specially trained to listen. “Over time, it may be necessary to set up a follow-up so that you are accompanied. There are also associations which can listen to you and which are specialized”, continues the respondent.

The listening center provides advice but also information on support systems for people with suicidal tendencies or in distress. “It’s very difficult to talk to someone close to you. It’s a subject that you dare not broach and when you try to broach it, sometimes it is swept away with the back of your hand because it is is a very difficult, very tense situation. This number allows us to defuse crisis situations, “explains Pierre Thomas, the national suicide prevention coordinator.

Support families

According to Charles-Edouard Notre-Dame, the coordinator of 31 14, this help is also essential for those around mourning by a suicide: “There are recent studies which have shown that directly or indirectly, when a person commits suicide , 130 people around him are affected. And it is very difficult because mourning after suicide is particularly painful and a vector of guilt. And it is necessary to be able to provide an appropriate and specific response “.

The 31 14 is free, confidential and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
