Telethon and Cariplo foundations together against rare diseases

Telethon Foundation and Cariplo Foundation together for scientific research: a call has been launched to finance projects on unknown or still poorly understood aspects of rare diseases. For the first time, the two foundations, reads a joint note, combine resources and skills in an initiative that promotes the study of genetic aspects and molecular mechanisms never studied so far but potentially useful for broadening knowledge and promoting the development of new therapies for these diseases.

From the analysis of the scientific literature it emerges that researchers and funding agencies tend to focus studies only on a limited portion of our genetic heritage. However, there are also regions of DNA that are less studied or that do not code for proteins or sets of genes, with related RNAs and proteins, of still unknown function that could have an important role, both from a physiological and pathological point of view.

It is on these premises that the Telethon Foundation and the Cariplo Foundation have joined forces and launched a joint call, to stimulate researchers to focus on these aspects that are still little known but with great potential. Both projects presented by a single organization and partnership projects are admitted, with a maximum budget of 250 thousand euros per project. The organizations, leader and partner, must be Italian non-profit, public or private research bodies.

“Through this call, opened in collaboration and full synergy with the Cariplo Foundation – said Francesca Pasinelli, director general of the Telethon Foundation – we want to breathe new life into scientific research of excellence by supporting projects that can increase knowledge of genes associated with rare diseases. whose function is completely or largely unknown and pave the way for new therapies. “

“Working together towards the same goal – concludes Giovanni Fosti, President of the Cariplo Foundation – sharing knowledge and always keeping open the ability to learn from reality: this is the path that will allow us to face the great challenges of our time also in the biomedical and lifescience fields. “.
