In Pfastatt, near Mulhouse, a jam maker has made a range of sugar-free products, and therefore suitable for people with diabetes. Classified nutriscore A, it was designed in partnership with the European Center for the Study of Diabetes.

REPORTAGE

As World Diabetes Day unfolds on Sunday, the disease still affects nearly 4 million people in France. For those concerned, the number 1 enemy remains the added sugar contained in many foods. Diabetics should only consume it in very small quantities and thus give up certain pleasures. But in Pfastatt, near Mulhouse, a jam maker has achieved a small feat: to create a new range of products perfectly suited to people with diabetes.

For the past two weeks, this jam factory has therefore been manufacturing a brand new product. With raspberries, plums or rhubarb, you can’t officially call it a jam. Instead, say “fruit spread”. “It is not a jam since we removed all the sugar, it was replaced by fruit, that is to say for example 96% strawberries, 96% apricot”, details Philippe Beyer , the owner of the brand. “Then then, a little bit of gelling agent for the texture, a little bit of lemon juice and a sweetener called sucralose.”

“Beneficial for everyone”

This nutriscore A product therefore has no impact on the glycemic index of people with diabetes. It was designed in partnership with the European Center for the Study of Diabetes, of which Professor Michel Pinget is the president. “It’s really a great product for us … Not just for diabetics. It is also good for anyone who does not want to consume sugar. It can only be beneficial for everyone”, assures the latter.

And this product produced is very good, very fruity. A little more liquid than a classic jam, a little more expensive too, around 30%. In your supermarket, count less than 3 euros a jar.
