NFT: Bored Apes Yatch Club creator buys CryptoPunks and Meebits

Yuga Labs, the company that created Bored Apes Yatch Club, struck a deal with Larva Labs to buy CryptoPunks and Meebits. The announcement was made this week.

And if the amount of the transaction is not mentioned, it is one of the most important acquisitions in the field of NFT. In a blog post, Yuga Labs announces that it now owns the trademarks, copyrights, and intellectual properties of these two collections.

At the same time, Yuga Labs also acquired 423 CryptoPunks as well as 1,711 Mebits. It is important to clarify that it is the NFTs that are changing companies, but that Larva Labs will continue to operate independently.

“When we set out to create in the NFT space, we did so with deep admiration for CryptoPunks and the visionary work of the project’s founders, Matt and John. Their work advanced NFTs, the Ethereum blockchain, and the entire crypto space, and influenced how we built BAYC. We are honored to support the CryptoPunks and Meebits brands into the future as part of the larger ecosystem we are building”reads the Yuga Labs announcement.

Yuga Labs also announces that soon, the owners of NFT CryptoPunks and Meebits will be able to enjoy the same commercial rights as the owners of NFT BAYC. On the other hand, the company assures that it will not include these NFTs in a Bored Apes Yacth “club” model.

“We view BAYC as the center of the universe we are building at Yuga, and CryptoPunks as a historical collection”the company said.

Bored Apes Yatch Club and CryptoPunks, now in the same house

According to data from OpenSea, relayed by The Verge, to date, more than $1 billion worth of Bored Apes have been traded. It is the second largest collection, behind CryptoPunks, which total $2.2 billion in transactions. As for Meebits, transactions today amount to 227 million dollars.

For the American media, the acquisition could be a sign of consolidation and professionalization of the NFT market.

Matt Hall and John Watkinson, the co-founders of Larva Labs, told The Verge that they believe Yuga Labs is better positioned to spearhead the CryptoPunks and Meebits projects. “We felt like we were less and less suited to this as an experimental software developer duo”they explained.

In any case, this deal is taking place at a time when NFTs are of growing interest to major digital players. On Twitter, you already have the option of embedding NFTs in your profile picture. And this week, Mark Zuckerberg also announced support for NFTs on Instagram. Soon, we should be able to integrate these on the profile image, but also to create them on the platform.
