O twitter cannot shirk its obligations, even after abandoning a voluntary code of practice from the European Union to combat misinformation, EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton warned the company on Friday.
To the companies signers of the code are required to provide regular progress reports with data on how much ad revenue from disinformation agents they have avoided.
Companies must also provide information about the number or value of political ads accepted or rejected and instances of detected manipulative behavior.
“Twitter abandons the voluntary EU code of practice against misinformation. But the obligations remain. You can run, but you can’t hide,” Breton said in a tweet.
“In addition to voluntary commitments, combating disinformation will be a legal obligation of the DSA starting August 25th. Our teams will be ready for the application”, he added, referring to the Digital Services Law (DSA) that obliges the twitter, Google, Goal, Microsoft, aliexpressof alibabaand five other major digital platforms doing more to tackle illegal content online.
Since Twitter was acquired by the billionaire Elon Musk for 44 billion dollars, in October of last year, the company cut thousands of jobs and made numerous changes.
Twitter, which no longer has a public relations department, responded to an emailed request for comment with a feces emoji.
