(ANSA) – ROME, FEB 25 – “The legislation on the presumption of innocence is not an idea of the Minister or the Government, but it is the necessary implementation of a European directive, which dates back to 2016. It is a legislation necessary to balance two indispensable principles of the Italian Constitution and European law: on the one hand, the right of the media to inform and of citizens to be informed and, on the other, the right of suspects and accused persons not to be represented as guilty. The presumption of innocence for centuries it is a cornerstone of our democracies, as is the right to information “, said the Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, remotely speaking at a conference organized by the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna.
