Laborer who died of cold in Barletta, a plaque commemorates him

Ukraine, Lukashenko:

(ANSA) – BARLETTA, 27 FEB – A little over a year ago, on 15 February 2021, he was found dead by the other migrants with whom he shared a bed. This morning, under the same rain and the same cold as that day, some volunteers returned to that place, on the Ponente seafront in Barletta, to dedicate a plaque to him and leave some flowers.

The place is the former cable car station. Once it was used to bring salt from the salt flats of Margherita di Savoia to the port.

Unused for decades, it has become a refuge for foreign laborers. Ahmed Saki, originally from Morocco, was one of them and was 47 years old last year when he was found dead from the cold in that makeshift shelter. The intervention of the firefighters was necessary to take his body out, the rain had made the structure inaccessible.

To denounce the conditions in which those migrants – mostly farm laborers – live, the volunteers affixed a plaque that reads “In memory of a person not to be forgotten”, Saki Ahmed, Khzarra (Morocco), 01/01 / 1974 – Barletta, 15/02/2021, and placed some flowers, but also to denounce the deterioration of that place and the fact that there are still people who use it as a shelter.

“We are here so that his death is not useless, so that this ceases and these people are given a decent place to sleep”, said the president of the popular clinic Cosimo Matteucci. “We will come back here with the other associations and committees – added Matteucci – to put pressure because this situation must end for Ahmed Saki and for all those who live here, to give attention to the weakest people”.
