Ukraine: Alina, 16, no uniform for me, I just want peace

(ANSA) – TREIA, MARCH 16 – “After this war I no longer want to know anything about military school and I hope that even mum and dad will one day leave the Army. I just want peace”: Alina (the fictional name), a 16-year-old girl with a lock of blonde hair and eyes full of tears who, after escaping from Ukraine, found refuge in Treia, in the Marche region.

Her parents are military and are fighting against the Russians, her mother entrusted her to a friend on the run with her twin children and said: “Take her away with you, save my daughter”. “We manage to talk to mum every day – says the girl -. Dad, on the other hand, is fighting in a place where internet lines often don’t work and I haven’t heard from him for a few days”. She looks older than her age, but in her eyes you can see all the pain she is going through.

“I was studying psychology at military school – he continues – When I grow up I still want to be a psychologist, but no uniform”.

In Treia, a small village in the Macerata area, Alina, together with the other two boys who fled with her, has been attending the Commercial Institute for several days. A way to try to integrate with the local reality, rather than to mature a course of study. Also because Alina dreams of returning to Kiev as soon as possible, where she also left her boyfriend, Maxim, two years older than her: “When it is all over – says the young woman – I will return to Ukraine and go to look for him to hug him” .

Tears run down her face, her thoughts are fixed on her parents and on everything she had to leave behind. And when she is asked how she imagines her future, she finds it hard to answer: “Definitely in Ukraine, but who knows when”. “Also because we don’t even know if we will find our homes again”, the other two young people who arrived in Treia with her intervene in a low voice.
