Day against homophobia: for under 30s, 60% of violence is in the family

The reports to the Gay help line for mistreatment And violence in family. More than 50% of the reports come from under 35. In the 13-29 age group, 60% of homophobic abuse occurs within the family. These are the numbers provided by the Gay help line which underlines that 20% of users between 18 and 26 years of age requested accommodation at Refuge Lgbt, the first family home in Italy for young LGBT + discriminated families. Also in this case there is a significant increase.

Since the beginning of the service, over 60 boys and girls of age who are victims of family violence have been welcomed and many minors have been reported to social services. 35% report access difficulties or fewer opportunities in the world of work after coming out.

18% report hateful acts towards adults in the workplace or training context. 15% involve workplace bullying, stalking and revenge porn, which double for trans women. 19% denounce attacks and threats and 15% denounce bullying and discriminatory acts.

Almost all of them – explains Gay help line – choose to access the Gay Help Line services but do not formally report to the authorities, because they say they are afraid and do not feel protected enough. In cases of complaint, collaboration with OSCAD was fundamental, especially in combating violence in the family following the coming out. Compared to the pandemic period, requests for support from asylum seekers for sexual orientation and gender identity increased by 150%, returning to pre-pandemic numbers.
