Tugboat sunk: Tortolì mourns dead sailor

(ANSA) – TORTOLI, MAY 20 – Condolence in Tortolì, in Ogliastra, for the death of Andrea Massimo Loi, the 58-year-old sailor from the Ogliastra town and one of the five victims of the shipwreck that took place two days ago 50 miles from the coast of Bari.

The man had moved from an early age to the Peninsula, first to Ancona and then to Bari, where he leaves a partner. Lately he did not return often to Tortolì where his brothers and old friends of him live.

“I learned the tragic news this morning and we are trying to track down Andrea’s family to show our closeness and that of our community – Mayor Massimo Cannas told ANSA – Andrea is part of a family known in Arbatax and Tortolì, where he learned the seafaring tradition that he had put to good use with his work leaving for the Continent about 30 years ago. Here he has at least three brothers who left yesterday for Bari. We remember him as a seaman and as an athlete, esteemed and well-liked by everyone. His disappearance shocked the whole community. “

Andrea Loi and five other crew members had left Ancona for Durres to tow a pontoon boat. Halfway there, however, the tug began to take on water and within minutes it sank. Waves up to two and a half meters high left no escape for three sailors, while two others are missing. The only survivor, at the moment, is the commander of the tug, hospitalized in Bari.
