In the post-pandemic 58.3% of locals invest, beer at the center of recovery

(ANSA) – MILAN, 20 JUN – The recovery of Italian restaurants after the crisis caused by the pandemic revolves around beer. Whether it is light (56.2%) or artisanal (45.3%), beer is king in the future of Ho.Re.Ca. While wine (white and red) ends up in third place (43.8%), cocktails and spirits in fourth (42.7%), sparkling wine in fifth (19.8%). And there is an ever-increasing role for low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beers (10.4%).

This was revealed by a study commissioned by the Osservatorio Birra to the Piepoli Institute, which interviewed 200 managers and owners of restaurants, pizzerias, bars, pubs, hotels and clubs, probing the expectations and investments of a sector that has over 300,000 public establishments. The study, carried out in collaboration with Partesa, the largest food & beverage distribution company in Italy, shows how much Covid has left its mark on the away from home.

In the last two years, half of the premises (53.1%) have had a decline in turnover and one in five (22.9%) has been forced to reduce staff. After the pandemic, 60.4% of the restaurants profoundly changed the business, revising prices and offers (34.4%), opening up to delivery and take-away (21.9%), imagining menus with fewer courses (19 , 8%) and expanding the opening hours, to intercept new consumption opportunities (16.1%). But to move forward, it is necessary to invest: 58.3% of the premises, despite the difficulties, are making investments, on average within 20 thousand euros, to adapt to the new needs.

The sector that is restarting will begin to be relevant again for young people, as a place of work and professional destination. For 44% of companies there are already requests for young people today.
