Refugees: in Bari a garden named after Aylan Kurdi

(ANSA) – BARI, 20 JUN – “Giving recognition to a child fleeing a war-torn country wants to be not only a tribute to all the innocent victims of violence and hatred, but also a gesture of hope in a better future: this is why we have followed up on the request of the students of the Carrante school, who in a touching letter wrote us that Aylan Kurdi, her lifeless body on the sand of Bodrun, remains for them the symbol of all the children who in everything the world are still forced to flee war in search of a better future “. This was stated by the mayor of Bari and ANCI president, Antonio Decaro, participating, on the occasion of the World Refugee Day, in the ceremony of naming the garden in front of the Carrante primary school in the Poggiofranco district to Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian child who died in 2015 on the coast Turks, following the shipwreck of the boat on which he and his family tried to reach Europe.

“Bari has a traditional history of hospitality – added Decaro – but this should not be an excuse for us to feel acquitted today in the face of so many people who are still forced to leave their country, putting, as in this case, also at risk the life of their children and their families.

Thanks once again to the schools that with our children do an invaluable job on the level of the educational offer but also on citizenship education by addressing issues such as migration that are part of our lives. And the fact – concluded the mayor – that they asked us for this plaque is the sense that the school is doing a great job “. (ANSA).
