A piece of Rome’s history goes up in smoke. “The professor’s stall“, historical bench of used books in Piazzale Flaminiowas devoured by flames this morning.
L’fire – which has all the characteristics of a malicious action – in a few minutes he burned hundreds of volumes making that place, frequented by both intellectuals and simple enthusiasts, a heap of ashes.
To alert the fire fighters, around 5 on Saturday morning, some passers-by. “She is burning everything, run”. A team arrived on the spot with a tank truck, in an extreme attempt to save at least part of the volumes. The flames however, they had already destroyed almost everything, starting with the structure that had protected those used books for years.
There is at work on what happened police which, as usual, will send an information notice to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The track of voluntary action seems to be the most accredited and answers to this effect could come from the surveillance cameras in the area.
The news of the fire at the “stall” immediately reached the social networks. Dozens of comments condemning what happened but also many proposals for initiatives in support of the owner.
“He is an elderly man, he is literally in tears – writes on twitter, Leonetta Bentivoglio, journalist and writer -. Nazi stuff”. It is not excluded that the neighborhood can organize a collection in order to be able to rebuild, in a short time, that corner of culture a stone’s throw from Piazza del Popolo.
“Let’s bring him all our books – writes another user -, just decide the day at the time”. A proposal welcomed with enthusiasm by many. “I’m not from Rome – adds Serena – but if there were any initiatives to help the owner in some way I would like to do it”.
