(ANSA) – VATICAN CITY, JUL 17 – “I am about to make a penitential pilgrimage and I hope that, with the grace of God, it can contribute to the path of healing and reconciliation already undertaken”. The Pope said this at the Angelus speaking of his trip to Canada which will begin “next Sunday, God willing”. “Unfortunately, many Christians in Canada, including some members of religious institutes, have contributed to the policies of cultural assimilation which in the past have seriously damaged native communities in various ways,” Pope Francis underlined.
The Pontiff also recalled that, before his trip to Canada, which will begin on Sunday 24 July, he “received at the Vatican some groups representing indigenous peoples to whom I expressed my pain and solidarity for the evil they have suffered”. (HANDLE).
