Former Vicar General Matzneller died of Covid

(ANSA) – BOLZANO, 20 JUL – The former vicar general Josef Matzneller passed away last night in Bolzano, after contracting Covid. He was 77 years old and had been Bishop Gargitter’s private secretary for 16 years and then for twenty years, until 2016, vicar general of the Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone, accompanying the pastoral service of three bishops. The funeral will be held on Monday 1 August at 3 pm in the cathedral of Bressanone.

Matzneller was born on 19 September 1944 in Aldino. Ordained a priest on 10 October 1970 in Rome, he then continued his studies in the capital until 1975. He was then private secretary of Bishop Joseph Gargitter for 16 years and in addition from 1989 to 1996 Icesan Chancellor.

Over the next twenty years, from 1996 to 2016, Monsignor Matzneller held the office of Vicar General of the Diocese, accompanying the pastoral service of three bishops. From August 2008 to March 2009 (from the death of Bishop Egger to the appointment of his successor Golser) he was diocesan administrator; in 2009 he was reconfirmed Vicar General by Bishop Golser and in addition Canon of the Cathedral of Bressanone.

In 2014, Bishop Muser awarded Josef Matzneller the diocesan medal on the occasion of his 70th birthday. At the conclusion of his mandate as vicar general, Pope Francis – at the request of the bishop – appointed Josef Matzneller “monsignor”. This honorary title of “Chaplain of His Holiness” was no longer conferred in our Diocese after the Council. From 1 September 2017 Monsignor Matzneller had assumed the office of President of the Foundation “Bishop’s Palace of Bressanone – Diocesan Museum and Diocesan Archive.” Before the funeral, the body will be exposed from Friday 29 July in the church of the Bishop’s Palace in Bressanone. The funeral will take place on Monday 1 August at 3 pm in the cathedral of Bressanone. Monsignor Matzneller will be buried under the arches of the Bressanone cemetery. (HANDLE).
