Government, Count:

(ANSA) – MASSAROSA (LUCCA), 19 JUL – A forest fire that broke out yesterday in the hills of Massarosa (Lucca) in Versilia, forced the evacuation of some houses in the late evening as a precaution and the closure of the motorway junction Lucca-Viareggio which connects the A11 with the A12. This was announced by the Municipality of Massarosa explaining on Fb that the “terrible” fire is still in progress. The motorway junction, we learn from the traffic police, is still interrupted to traffic – which can still take the ordinary road network – while “for people who have left their homes in these hours and for those in need of assistance”, the Municipality on Fb provides a telephone number to contact.

The flames, which started from the locality of Bozzano, spread during the night in the vast resinous woods typical of the area.

“Despite the rapid intervention of the firefighting volunteer teams – explains the Tuscany Region -, the inaccessible area and the poor access roads prevented the containment of the fire. The light north-east wind that blew all night did not facilitate extinguishing and in this moment the flames came to threaten some houses manned by the fire brigade. The Lucca-Viareggio link road was closed and reopened as a precaution several times because the smoke invaded the roadway. The fire was divided into sectors , in order to establish the priorities of intervention and the best strategy. Three helicopters and two Canadair operate in the area. On the ground 12 firefighting volunteer teams and forestry workers under the coordination of 2 operations directors, are working very hard to secure the most dangerous areas and keep the flames away from the houses. A Gauf team also operates on site, which will apply counter-fire techniques to reduce the flame front “. (HANDLE).
