(ANSA) – MILAN, AUGUST 26 – He was born with a serious intestinal and urological malformation and was not operable in his country. But now the story of a one-year-old Ukrainian boy finally has a happy ending. The little boy and his mother quickly fled the country at the start of the Russian invasion and arrived in Milan. At the Polyclinic the child underwent a course of treatment and now he has finally been able to return home to his family.

“He was born with a serious anorectal malformation – says Ernesto Leva, director of the Pediatric Surgery of the Polyclinic of Milan – and was hospitalized for further urological complications caused by his condition”.

There was little hope of recovery. Among the volunteers of the NGO Rainbow4Africa active in Ukraine there was also Daniele Dondossola, doctor of the General Surgery of the Milan Polyclinic. After a long journey, the child is taken to the Milanese hospital, which specializes in diagnosis and high-quality care for patients with rare and complex uro-rectal-genital diseases.

Having examined the situation, the doctors plan a course of reconstructive surgeries, but both the baby and the mother find themselves positive for Covid. Once recovered from the virus, the child is entrusted to pediatric surgeons and urologists who intervene together with pediatric anesthesia and resuscitation experts. The first surgery lasts 6 hours, in which the terminal portion of the intestine is reconstructed, the left kidney is removed and the urinary tract is reconstructed.

Then, after a few weeks of hospitalization to stabilize the situation, at the beginning of August the little one returns to the operating room for intestinal recanalization: “The surgical procedure is so complete – concludes Leva – and there has been no complication, so much so that after a few days the little one was able to go home “.
