Dual citizenship in Ukraine: the NSDC told about the prospects

In Ukraine, there is a constitutional norm regarding the mechanism of dual citizenship, and the legislator must decide it. This was told by the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

“Now in parliament there are several bills that relate to these processes, so it depends more on the legislator,” Danilov said.

The politician also recalled that there are many Ukrainians with a patriotic stance in Canada, the USA, Kazakhstan, and therefore they should be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship.

However, Danilov expressed doubts whether persons with dual citizenship can obtain admission to public service.

“All this needs to be prescribed so that later there will be no discrepancies when using this citizenship,” Danilov added.

Note that earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he advocates dual citizenship, while the approach to each country should be separate.

This is not the first step by the president to combat dual or multiple citizenship of civil servants. Zelensky made one of these steps on March 4. Then the president enacted another NSDC decision on this topic – “On urgent measures to counter threats to national security in the field of citizenship.”

As a reminder, MPs from various political forces submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft of amendments to the law “On Citizenship of Ukraine” regarding the automatic loss of Ukrainian citizenship in the event of voluntarily acquiring citizenship of the aggressor state – the Russian Federation.
