(ANSA) – SAN GIULIANO DI PUGLIA, OCTOBER 31 – Silence, pain and emotion for the Day of Remembrance in San Giuliano di Puglia, commemoration of the 27 children and the teacher Carmela Ciniglio who died in the collapse of the “Jovine” school during the earthquake of 31 October 2002. The 30 tolling of the bells of the cemetery where the whole community met together with the regional and local authorities, opened the day in memory of the pupils who remained under the rubble.
The mayor Giuseppe Ferrante welcomed the president of the Molise Region Donato Toma, the mayors of the territory and the president of the Province of Campobasso, as well as the mayor of Termoli, Francesco Roberti.
After the commemoration in the cemetery, the community reached the Parco della Memoria built where the Jovine elementary school was once located; a crown was laid here in memory of the pupils. The Day of Remembrance continues with the prayer vigil in the afternoon, the torchlight procession in the evening and will end tomorrow morning with the solemn mass in the mother church of San Giuliano di Puglia.
