History of Children’s Day

Established the holiday of the Women’s International Democratic Federation, at a congress that took place in November 1949 in Paris. Already in June 1950, the date was celebrated in 51 countries of the world. The original purpose of the holiday was to draw attention to the protection of children left without parents after the Second World War.

The UN quickly supported the initiative of women activists, because the rights of children are among the main priorities of the organization. In December 1954, she supported the initiative of India and Uruguay to introduce an appropriate holiday, and on November 20, 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

Moreover, on the same date in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. But on June 1, this date is celebrated by countries that were once part of the Soviet Union and many countries in other parts of the world. There are also other dates when children’s rights are celebrated on a special day in different states.
