Celebration of the Ukrainian writing and language at the official level was established by a presidential decree in 1997 year
… This year the holiday falls on Tuesday.

The date was not chosen by chance. On the same day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Monk Nestor the Chronicler, also known as Nestor of the Pechersky or Nestor Kievsky
.

Nestor lived at the turn of the XI-XII centuries and was a monk of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. But he became famous for being a Ukrainian chronicler, a follower of the creators of Slavic writing Cyril and Methodius, as well as one of the authors “Tale of Bygone Years”
, which is of great importance for Slavic culture.

According to researchers, it was Saint Nestor who became the founder of Old Russian historiography, the first historian of Kievan Rus, and also the creator of written Ukrainian language

Day of Ukrainian writing and language: interesting facts and traditions

The ancient Slavic people had two alphabets at the same time – Cyrillic and Glagolitic
… At the same time, researchers believe that the Cyrillic alphabet, which is used by most of the Slavic peoples, was created on the basis of the Glagolitic alphabet and Greek symbols. The Glagolitic alphabet still has no analogues.

For a long time, my parents had tradition on November 9
: take the children to school, and then come to the temple, put a candle in front of the icon of St. Nestor, pray and ask for help in mastering the sciences and easy study for your child.

Nowadays, since 2000, the holiday of writing and language in Ukraine is centrally held radio dictation of national unity
… Anyone can take part in it to test their literacy and knowledge of their native language, as well as demonstrate unity with everyone who loves and honors the Ukrainian language.
