(ANSA) – CATANIA, NOV 10 – The Gup of Catania, Marina Rizza, acquitted, with the formula ‘because the fact does not exist’, Emilio Coveri, president of the Exit-Italia association, at the conclusion of the process with the shortened procedure for instigation to commit suicide for the use of euthanasia in Switzerland in 2019 by a 47-year-old from the province of Etna. The Prosecutor’s Office, which had asked for a sentence of three years and four months of imprisonment, will consider whether to appeal the sentence after the filing of the reasons, expected within the next 90 days. The mother, sister and three brothers of the woman appeared as civil parties in the proceedings.

At the center of the trial was the use of euthanasia on March 27, 2019 in a Swiss clinic of a 47-year-old from the province of Etna who was not terminally ill, but who had been suffering from a serious form of depression for some time. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, which coordinated investigations by carabinieri and postal police, Coveri “determined or in any case strengthened the suicidal intention” of the woman, which later occurred with euthanasia in a clinic in Zurich.

It would also have “induced the woman” who “suffered from depression and Eagle’s syndrome to join the Exit association” and held “conduct accompanied by solicitations and arguments regarding the ethical legitimacy of the choice” of assisted suicide.

“The lady – Coveri has always maintained – was one of our associates and we simply provided her, at her request, with the information she needed to make a decision. A normal procedure”. (HANDLE).
