Scholz and the no to Taurus: How does his “Basta” help against Putin?

If this Chancellor survey in the Bundestag about Taurus and other things showed one thing, it was this: Nobody can do Olaf Scholz. At least that’s what he thinks, and somehow he says it, although at times he seems surprisingly thin-skinned. Nevertheless, the following applies: They can speak as they want in the opposition, but also in his coalition.

Anyone who didn’t know or didn’t want to believe it – Scholz has decided, is decided, remains decided: against the Taurus for Ukraine. In the public forum, that of the sovereign, in our high house, the Chancellor spoke from the highest vantage point. And how.

Whoever wants to, be it Anton Hofreiter from the Greens or Marie-Luise Strack-Zimmermann from the FDP, can still campaign for it, it doesn’t matter, no one will change the mind of their leader in the traffic lights. At most, he himself. And as of today, that is unlikely.

The status is: Scholz will already know that the cruise missile does not have to be programmed for targets by German soldiers, neither in the country nor outside of it. But whether necessary or not, the Chancellor believes that this military equipment simply cannot and should not be used without German soldiers. From this he derives the concept of war participation.

If he sees it that way, there really isn’t much left to discuss. Then the Taurus will not be given in a roundabout way, neither to the British nor even to the Ukrainians. For Scholz – although he doesn’t say so – that would be mere mirror-fighting. Maybe he even thinks it’s intellectually dishonest.

But definitely dangerous. Because on the other side there is actually someone who is watching and seeing through everything: Vladimir Putin. And if it is true that this tyrant, this Ras Putin, cannot be measured by normal standards, then one can certainly be afraid that he means everything he says seriously. Including the use of nuclear weapons.

The agent in the Kremlin – a master at destroying the psyche

After all, Putin has been talking about this option since February 24, 2022, in one form or another, and certainly with a view to Crimea, which he never wants to give up again. The trained agent in the Kremlin is a master at destroying the psyche of people, states and alliances. That’s what he’s practicing right now.

Putin is obsessed with the delusion of building a Russian empire. That makes him even more dangerous. However, it would be good if the Chancellor had given a tiny insight into his thinking in this regard. Or would still give. Then it would be easier to follow him.

The question still remains: How can Putin be stopped? And where? Because of hesitant arms deliveries in the past, the Ukrainian offensive has not become a real one. It’s fatal, absolutely terrible.

Reality is brutally different

Now it looks like this: The Ukrainian units are stuck, the ammunition is running out, there are no soldiers, morale is falling – and the Russians are on the advance. The fact that they couldn’t have enough weapons or soldiers is just a wish. Reality is brutally different.

That’s why the debate in the coalition broke out in this way: because it’s about a historical challenge, for Germany and indeed for the entire West. And because Putin wants more than Ukraine. So he has to be stopped, inevitably. The best thing for everyone would be: in the east of Ukraine. In the West, the Russian would be standing on our doorstep, so to speak.

Everyone sees that, especially the Greens and the FDP, and they want to give a more powerful answer to that. But jeopardize your traffic light for Taurus? Then it’s better not to. The dimension of what is happening is subordinated to the desire to maintain power on the one hand, and to the Chancellor on the other.

Scholz says: We deliver so much that helps, more than anyone else in Europe. Taurus doesn’t help. Basta. In the end, the Chancellor’s word counts. Now we can only hope that his stance actually prevents damage to the country.
