President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on multiple citizenship for Ukrainians… In particular, those living in the countries of the European Union and the United States.
This is evidenced by the data on the website of the parliament. Bill № 6368 defined by the head of state as urgent. The text of the document has not yet been published.
In addition to him, the President introduced another urgent bill on preventing and countering threats to national security in the field of citizenship, registered under № 6369… Its content has not yet been published either.
Two more bills have been submitted: № 6370 on amendments to Article 570 of the Customs Code of Ukraine on preventing and countering threats to the national security of Ukraine in the field of citizenship and № 6371 on amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the Judicial System and the Status of Judges” regarding the prevention and counteraction of threats to the national security of Ukraine in the sphere of citizenship.
Recall that President Zelensky, speaking in the Rada, said that Ukrainians abroad should feel like citizens of their homeland.
Double citizenship
- Now Ukrainian legislation prohibits having dual (multiple) citizenship. According to Art. 4 of the Constitution of Ukraine, in the country “there is only one citizenship.” However, there are no sanctions for dual citizenship.
- Earlier, MPs from various political forces submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft of amendments to the law “On Citizenship of Ukraine” regarding the automatic loss of Ukrainian citizenship in the event of voluntarily acquiring citizenship of the aggressor state – the Russian Federation.
- According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Ukrainians need the possibility of dual citizenship with other countries, with the exception of Russia.
