Christmas: the tallest carved nativity scene in the world in Cave

Quirinale, Luigi Di Maio:

The tallest carved nativity scene in the world is located in Cave, a village of nearly 11,000 souls south of Rome.
Nine statues, including the Child in the arms of the Madonna, made by the Romagna master Lorenzo Ferri, ranging from a height of 2.5 meters up to 4 meters as in the case of the Assyrian-Persian Wise King. Since 2012, this spectacular and unique nativity has been set up in a room of the former Augustinian convent, adjacent to the Town Hall, which ANSA visited in the historic center of the town. “A couple of years ago – says Silvia Baroni, councilor for culture of Cave – we asked to be included in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest crib in the world, but the organization does not distinguish between cribs made with sculpted sculptures and those made with removable scaffolding and therefore we came second, behind a representation of a Mexican village “.
A record that last year was pulverized by Alicante, Spain, where another nativity scene, 18 meters high, was built in the main square of the city, but always built with innocent pipes and therefore a scaffolding that is not fixed in time .
Some characteristics of the statues: “The Madonna with baby Jesus – recalls the commissioner, who is also an art historian – is 3 meters and 30 centimeters high, St. Joseph 3 meters and 60.
We remember – he adds – that this nativity is designed to represent the Epiphany and therefore we have the Magi with their pages in tow. Ferri – concludes Baroni – sculpted the tallest Wise Man taking as a model the world boxing champion, Erminio Spalla, while the Indian king shows the artist’s self-portrait on his face “.
