In 2020 Leonardo and Sofia remain the favorite names on the basis of the information contained in the survey of those registered in the registry by birth. This is what emerges from an Istat report.
Among the male names Francesco confirms his second place again this year while Alessandro regains third position undermining Lorenzo who goes down to fourth place. Among the female ones there is an exchange on the podium between Giulia, who goes up from third to second place, and Aurora, which goes down from the second to the third. Although there are over 26,000 different names for boys and over 25,000 for girls (including both simple and compound names), the distribution of the number of births by name reveals a high concentration around the top 30 in order of frequency, which together cover over 44% of all names attributed to males and almost 38% of those of females.
Leonardo achieves the primacy in all the regions of the Center-North (with the exception of the autonomous province of Bolzano where Jonas stands out) and, among the southern regions, it also prevails in Abruzzo and Sardinia. Francesco ranks first in only 2 regions, all of the South (Puglia and Calabria) as well as Antonio (Campania and Basilicata); Giuseppe stably stands out in Sicily and, for the first time, Andrea makes his entrance taking the lead in Molise.
For girls, Sofia wins in all regions of the Center-North (with the exception of the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano and Trento where it prevails Emma, and Lazio where Giulia dominates) and in Abruzzo, Calabria and Sardinia The foreign children born to parents residing in Italy are mainly called Adam, Rayan and Amir, but also Leonardo, Matteo, Luca, Mattia and Davide. Even for foreign girls the primacy goes to Sofia, as for all the resident born, followed by Sara, Amira, Emily and Aurora.
