SPD occupies its ministerial posts: Klingbeil makes himself a strong man – and the risk in the cabinet

Party leader Lars Klingbeil promised renewal, and he delivered renewal. Only one SPD department head is preserved for the cabinet, namely Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Under no circumstances, a path would have led past him.

The other ministers, on the other hand, that the SPD leadership announced on Monday are new in this range: Lars Klingbeil, Bärbel Bas, Verena Hubertz, Stefanie Hubig, Reem Alabali-Radovan and Carsten Schneider.

So the SPD provides four ministers. The offer believes that you want to bring new perspectives to the government. Now applies in a good democratic tradition: everyone and their fair chance.

Almost even more much more than the list of nominees is, but who did not take Klingbeil on a black-red mission, promoted: how he had booted the previous Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Hubertus Heil, who would have gotten ready as leader of parliamentary group.

Heil is a full professional and a buffed negotiator, but remained human. One with decency, one with humor, they say across party borders. In addition, well networked and with a lot of experience.

Actually, exactly the job profile for the future parliamentary group leader, who has to accept Jens Spahn on the Union page. It is no less buffed up and is just as well networked.

In addition, in the coming years, work and social issues are likely to be disputed most hardest. Heil’s undisputed expertise in the group management would have been very valuable.

Klingbeil, however, has ended Heil’s career abruptly and instead preferred to chose the previous general secretary Matthias Miersch as the group leader. This is not confident, and damage to the PD’s punch on top.

Klingbeil’s handling of the always wilder debate about Saskia Esken is also unspeakable. Their unfortunate moments as chair are sufficiently described. However, a verve is also verbally thrashed on them, which women are particularly exposed to. And what is considered to be tampered and stubborn with her might be praised as a nuclearness in a man.

“Shameful”

This was the name of Lars Klingbeil in the “Bild” newspaper the debate about Saskia Esken.

The “Bild” newspaper now said Klingbeil that he finds the discussions of the past few weeks “shameful”. With this solidarity address, he comes around the corner, and that he finally dumped Saskia Esken shortly afterwards and does not take into account when awarding the cabinet posts, his regret is not more credible.

That shouldn’t mean that he should have transported Esken into the cabinet. It is true that it would have looked like the supply mentality of the very bad variety. But it is also a kind of leadership weakness not to find a better way out of such a dead end. This type of leadership weakness of the SPD may also have been doomed when she couldn’t manage to keep Olaf Scholz from a recognizable hopeless renewed candidate for chancellor.

It’s been a long time, now only the escape remains forward. Klingbeil has four years to move into the right light as a natural chancellor candidate for 2029.

As finance minister, he wants to act with Friedrich Merz at eye level and occupies the department, whose competencies will come closest to those of the Chancellery: whoever decides on money talks to them everywhere.

But Klingbeil is not a financial politician, and his new department is foreign to him. And that at a ministry that has to work on a highly complex matter. A lot of expertise is actually needed here. A government novice is also Klingbeil.

And so the SPD chairman is not only the undisputed man in his party, but also a risk in the cabinet.
