Poacher kills specimen of Avocetta, reported

Quirinale, Tajani:

(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, 29 JAN – He was hunting ducks in Mezzano Rondani, along the Po river, in the Parma area, when a specimen of Avocetta – a bird of the Recurvirostridia family with a very characteristic appearance with a beak curved upwards, legs and very long neck, white and black livery – it settled a few meters away: despite the animal being part of a protected species, it fired and killed it. The protagonist of the story is a hunter, identified by the Forestry Carabinieri of the Colorno station – in the anti-poaching surveillance service – and reported to the judicial authorities. The military confiscated the protected specimen, the rifle and ammunition.

The Avocet is a rare species linked to wetlands, generally migratory, during the winter when it reaches the wintering areas of the Mediterranean and Africa. Italy has just over 2500 breeding pairs of this species throughout the national territory.

According to what has been learned, the killing of the Avocetta does not seem motivated by food purposes, it seems, however, that it could be, given its elegance, rarity and livery, an object of interest to be embalmed. The Carabinieri Forestali are investigating the clandestine market for the conservation of dead animals for which the specimen was probably destined. (HANDLE).
