Czech President Milos Zeman was hospitalized on Sunday. A spokeswoman for the Prague Military University Hospital has now confirmed to the CTK news agency that the state’s condition is assessed as stabilized. Officially, little is known about the 77-year-old’s health; the Czech media report serious liver problems. According to the dpa, a personal spokesman for Zemans said that calm was initially important for him. However, he does not see the exploratory talks at risk from the incidents.
Zeman’s hospital admission took place one day after the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic and shortly after a meeting with the head of government Andrej Babis, who was narrowly defeated in the election.
According to the constitution, the president has to propose a candidate for the office of head of government to parliament. In the election at the weekend, the conservative opposition alliance Spolu (Together) achieved 108 seats, followed by Prime Minister Babis’ ANO party with 72 seats. Babis hopes to be able to hold onto power despite the narrow electoral defeat of his party. President Zeman is considered an ally of the head of government. (AFP / dpa)
