Head of State Sergio Mattarella dissolves Parliament, voting on 25 September. Putting an end to the legislature “is always the last choice to be made”, declares the President of the Republic, aware, however, that there are no longer the margins to continue government action or even to seek other majorities. To make all this clear, observes Colle, was “the discussion, the vote and the ways in which this vote was expressed yesterday in the Senate”. However, Italy cannot be stopped: the social crisis bites, Covid returns to raise its head, the PNRR must be implemented. And here is the hope: even in the hours of an electoral campaign – which Mattarella foresees “acute and dialectical” – the political forces are called to make a “constructive contribution in the superior interest of Italy”.
In the middle of the afternoon, Prime Minister Mario Draghi goes up to the Quirinale and countersigns the decree for the dissolution of Parliament. A few minutes and the Council of Ministers meets: the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior propose the date of the polls, September 25. Then it will be up to the President of the Republic to issue the provision again. Accounts in hand, he means that the parties will have to close the lists for candidacies between mid and late August. “It will be #ViminaleBeach”, comments the deputy of the Democratic Party Stefano Ceccanti ironically.
Now, therefore, the parties will have to choose alliances and candidates, then they will have to finalize the programs. The government led by Mario Draghi, in charge of current affairs, will instead have the task of putting in place some responses necessary to buffer the economic and social crisis and to respect commitments with Europe as well as international ones, starting with the necessary diplomatic work to face the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
