Nine days before the presidential election in Brazil, former Brazilian leader and left-wing favorite Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has slightly increased his lead over right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in polls.
The percentage of votes Lula can hope for in the first round of voting on Oct. 2 rose to 47 percent from 45 percent the previous week, according to a poll by polling firm Datafolha on Thursday evening (local time).
Bolsonaro would therefore continue to receive around 33 percent of the votes. The social democratic politician Ciro Gomes followed in third place with 7 percent of the vote.
Lula ruled Brazil from early 2003 to late 2010. In 2018, the ex-president was sentenced to a long prison term for corruption and money laundering. Last year, a Supreme Court judge reversed the ruling – and Lula regained his political rights.
Bolsonaro, on the other hand, has already indicated that he might not accept an election defeat. (dpa)
