“More recognition for women”: Steinmeier introduces a quota for orders of merit

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wants to award at least 40 percent of the Orders of Merit to women in the future. As the Office of the Federal President announced on Wednesday in Berlin, a corresponding quota for the highest awards in the Federal Republic will be introduced. Although women and men are equally committed, only about a third of the orders go to women, it said.

At the same time, the head of state called for more women to be proposed for the Federal Cross of Merit. “Look around, in your neighborhood, in your free time, at your colleagues,” he explained. The Order of Merit lives on the incoming suggestions.

The award is a way to recognize outstanding performance for our community. “And it’s a way to give more women the recognition they deserve,” Steinmeier said.

The Federal Republic of Germany’s Order of Merit, which is awarded at various levels, is awarded to citizens who have rendered outstanding service in the political, economic, social, intellectual, cultural or social sphere.

The undoped award recognizes achievements for the common good in Germany. Anyone can submit suggestions. They are checked by the state and senate chancellery of the federal states.

The federal states then submit the proposals to the Federal President. The Federal Foreign Office is also entitled to nominate foreign nationals or Germans residing abroad. (epd)
