Wrong-way drivers in their own party: An FDP MP advocates a speed limit of 130 – on one condition

In response to the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, FDP member of parliament Christoph Hoffmann is calling for a new climate policy for all parties in the traffic light coalition, including his own. “As an immediate measure, we can put up to five functioning nuclear power plants back on the grid to reduce the proportion of coal-fired power generation,” said the parliamentarian to the Tagesspiegel: “Here the Green Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate must jump over his shadow – in return, the FDP should Make a speed limit of 130 km/h possible.”

The deputy chairman of the Bundestag Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development justifies his initiative with the global role model function for other countries. “The phasing out of coal must have top priority for the federal government – also in order not to jeopardize our international credibility,” said the liberal.

In view of the dramatic situation, we also have to rethink in Germany.

Christoph Hoffmann, FDP MP

If “China and India realize their plans for around 70 new coal-fired power plants, we have lost the fight for climate protection – that’s the bitter truth”. International climate diplomacy is facing a “mammoth task” that Germany must help to overcome: “Failure is not an option.”

Since the new world climate report specifically points to the importance of forests, more money from the Energy and Climate Fund of the Ministry of Economic Affairs should also be used for international reforestation and forest protection projects. The Development Ministry must also gear its budgetary tasks more towards this. “In view of the dramatic situation, we also have to rethink in Germany,” says Hoffmann.
