G7 Summit: France’s very proactive attitude during an intense diplomatic weekend

After Japan and Mongolia, Emmanuel Macron will be back in France on Monday. The weekend was marked by the surprise visit of Volodymyr Zelensky to the G7 summit in Hiroshima, orchestrated by France. When taking stock of this sequence, the Head of State praises his action on the international scene.

France distinguished itself this weekend at nearly 10,000 kilometers from the territory of the metropolis. Paris was a proactive member of this G7 summit held in Hiroshima, Japan. Because failing to deliver Rafales to Ukraine, France worked behind the scenes to organize the arrival of Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president was able to count on a plane from the French Republic to make this surprise visit to the leaders of the seven main industrialized democracies. But also to participate in the Arab League summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to the Élysée, it was also Emmanuel Macron who convinced Japan to invite Volodymyr Zelensky.

“It is the honor of France to have done this”

For the French president, this is a source of satisfaction. “I think it’s an honor for France to have done this and I think it’s completely consistent with our policy of supporting from the day draft. It’s also France building peace and seeking solutions, in particular by allowing President Zelensky to go before the Arab League, and to have very clear support from Saudi Arabia and several powers in the region, but also to come here to be able to express himself before the members of the G7 and obtain, sometimes, clarifications on the supports. It is a way of building peace”.

A way that is, it seems, not appreciated by Vladimir Putin. For Russia, the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 made this summit a “propaganda show”. Building peace will take a long time, but this Monday, Paris feels it has made its contribution.
