Meloni receives Maltese Prime Minister Abela. “EU border defense will solve secondary movements”

The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, receives the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, at Palazzo Chigi. The Maltese premier was received with military honors and the national anthems were sung.

“I am very happy to have received the Maltese Prime Minister Abela, it is a meeting that solidifies our work of relaunching solid relations that address many issues in common”. This was stated by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in joint statements to the press with the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, after the meeting at Palazzo Chigi. “And a relaunch is favored by convergence on many issues on the political agenda – he added -, we very often met at the European Council to defend mutual national interests, such as on irregular immigration flows, and I am thinking of the necessary opportunity to continue to make a common work also in view of the next EU council”.

“On the subject of immigration – said the premier – we agree that without an adequate defense of the external borders of the EU it becomes much more difficult to talk about secondary movements: the challenge is to work together on primary movements to resolve the age-old affair of secondary movements. We have worked with Abela to change the paradigm of the European Commission in recent years. We agree that cooperation with African countries to offer alternatives to illegal migration is fundamental”.

In the afternoon Meloni will meet Elon Musk, patron of Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX, at Palazzo Chigi, and the meeting of the Council of Ministers is scheduled for 6 pm.

“I updated Prime Minister Abela on the recent mission to Tunisia with von der Leyen and Rutte: I think that having adopted a joint declaration with Saied was an excellent result, which is now preparatory to trying to quickly reach a common agreement between Tunisia and the European Union We are very satisfied”, said the president of the Council.
