Not just the European elections, which are certainly a key event for politics and, thanks to the proportional voting system, an important test for parties and their leaders: 2024 promises to be a decidedly year full of electoral events which will see millions of Italians called to the polls.
In fact, many mayors will have to be elected: these are over 3,700 municipalities, including 27 provincial capitals and six regional capitals, while voting in can be considered another sort of national game 5 regions (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Piedmont, Sardinia and Umbria). Four of these will go to the polls before the European elections. At the moment However, only Sardinia has set the date (25 February), Abruzzo assumes March 10th while for Umbria the October window is indicated.
Obviously, the vote of the six regional capitals should also be monitored: Bari, Cagliari, Campobasso, Florence, Perugia and Potenza.
If the situation in Abruzzo is quite clear – the current governor, Marco Marsilio, elected with the centre-right should see his candidacy confirmed against Luciano D’Amico supported by the centre-left, M5S, IV and Action – the situation in Sardinia with a tough tug of war between Fdi and Lega, the former wanting Paolo Truzzu, the latter wanting the reconfirmation of Christian Solinas. There Basilicataprobably to vote in the spring, is currently led by Vito Bardi of Forza Italia who is seeking reconfirmation to most likely face Angelo Chiorazzo supported by the Democratic Party but not yet by the 5 stars despite the Democrats having frozen the use of primaries. The last of the 5 regions called to vote is Umbria, currently in the hands of Donatella Tesei of the League. The 10 months left until the vote don’t seem to rush the coalitions and at the moment the only name circulating is that of Riccardo Corridori of Alternativa Popolare.
