Piantedosi: ‘No summary trials of the police forces’

“The vision of the images of the clashes in Pisa, circulated in the media, disturbed me too. We are open to any analysis and self-criticism when, even a single demonstration or a single moment of a single demonstration, among the thousands that take place every year, requires further investigation. We all hope that public demonstrations take place peacefully and without incidents and when it comes to physical contact with minors it is still a defeat and it is even more necessary to carry out every verification with punctuality, objectivity and transparency”. Thus the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, in his briefing to the Chamber.

“Allow me to underline the right of members of the police force to do not undergo summary trials. They are workers who deserve the utmost respect! The management of public order is a daily commitment, delicate and not without risks, carried out with the utmost dedication by women and men in uniform”. Thus the Minister of the Interior. “I firmly reject – he adds – any attempt to involve, in political controversies, the work of the police forces, the guardian of the democratic institutions which has the fundamental and essential task of guaranteeing everyone, in an impartial manner, the exercise of the right of assembly and demonstration”.

Piantedosi, in the chamber of the Chamber, invites us not to “bring summary trials to the police” and all the centre-right deputies stand up to clap their hands long. Piantedosi is on the government benches next to the School Minister Giuseppe Valditara.

For the demonstration in Pisa last Friday, “in total violation of the law, no notice had been given to the police headquarters”, said Piantedosi. The police headquarters, adds the minister, “having heard about it, tried several times, without success, to contact the organizers to obtain information regarding the type of initiative that would be carried out and the related path, in order to be able to provide suitable public order services”.

According to the minister, after the Hamas attack on 7 October, “a broad and varied pro-Palestinian mobilization developed throughout the national territory, in many cases promoted by associations attributable to the antagonistic area or in which substantial participation was found of activists of this background. In this context, a growing ferment was also found among the student components of the antagonistic area”. It was also highlighted, adds Piantedosi, “a climate of growing aggression towards the police, both with the aim of being attractive and provoking reactions from those who manage public order, in order to increase the level of conflict between the ‘street’ and the institutions”.

“I address a heartfelt thanks, on behalf of all members of the Police Force, to the President of the Republicfor the solidarity expressed to the agents of the State Police who yesterday, in Turin, while carrying out a service connected to the repatriation of an immigrant, convicted several times for very serious crimes, were victims of a violent attack by a large group of anarchists”. Thus the Minister of the Interior. “I also thank him – he adds – for having reiterated, both to me and to the Chief of Police, his full trust and closeness towards the State Police”.

“I fully agreed – continues the minister – with the words pronounced by President Mattarella in the aftermath of the clashes in Pisa. As the head of state, I am I am also convinced that the authority of the police force is not nourished by the use of force. This authority is based on the sacrifice of hundreds of fallen in the fight against terrorism and crime, in the loyal defense of democratic institutions even in the darkest years of the Republic, in the ability to accompany the development of Italian society with balance and professionalism”.

At the demonstration in Pisa last Friday, “to ensure safety of the police officers, pressed against the vehicle placed behind them, was coming carried out a lightening charge, allowing the staff to advance a few meters and thus ease the pressure of the demonstrators”. This is the reconstruction of the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, in his briefing to the Chamber. Previously the agents had held their position “using only shields, despite the demonstrators continuing to apply pressure with pushes, kicks, insults, spitting and attempts to take away the shields”.

Meloni: ‘It is dangerous to withdraw support from the Police‘: It is a “game that can become very dangerous” that of “removing the support of the institutions from those who risk their safety every day to guarantee ours”. Six days after the beatings of the students marching in Pisa, and the warning from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella about the “failure” that these represent for the police because “authority” is not measured by truncheons, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirms the government’s support for the Police and warns of the risks that could arise from a collapse of trust in those who guarantee security.

Words that arrive on the day in which two unrelated episodes are intertwined, but which it is instead the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi who somehow connects: the transfer of the manager of the Mobile Department of Florence Silvia Conti – on whom they depend administratively the departments that operated in Pisa – who will take up service in the anti-crime section of Pescara and who will retire in six months, and the assault on a police car in front of the police station by the antagonists which took place in the afternoon in Turin. “

An unacceptable act of violence” which is, underlines the head of the Interior Ministry, “symptomatic of the climate of poison and suspicion to which the police and the police in particular are subjected in recent days”.

Both the prime minister and the minister – who will give her briefing in Parliament today on the events in Pisa – therefore openly side with the police, because we cannot talk about them “only when something doesn’t work”. Reiterating, Piantedosi did it in recent days and Meloni does it today, that “if someone makes a mistake, clearly they must intervene and sanction”.

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella called the Chief of Police to be informed of what happened and to express solidarity with the officers of the patrol attacked in Turin. The head of state also reiterated his trust and closeness towards the police. Immediately afterwards the president spoke to Minister Piantedosi.

Boccia: ‘I hope that Meloni’s words were not for Mattarella’

“Meloni says that it is dangerous to remove support from the Police? No one has ever removed support from the Police, as well as from the other law enforcement agencies and armed forces, from the Civil Protection and from the Fire Brigade, who we thank every day because they are at the forefront line. It is dangerous to bring the reasoning to this level, I hope that Premier Meloni did not refer to the words carved on stone by the President of the Republic. It is one thing to want to clarify and condemn what happened during the very serious episode in Pisa, a ‘another questioning the role of the Police. I hope that the right does not want to continue on this security terrain, they started with a rave decree that was not needed, they continued with flag measures so that when anything happens I intervene with a club and security” . She said it Francesco Boccia, president of the Democratic Party group in the Senate, at Omnibus on La7.

“But this sort of machismo of the right, for which the tough and rigorous ones have arrived and which collapses in the face of the complexity of reality, I would put aside – continued Boccia – and I would discuss what is happening in our country and the discomfort of young people After Piantedosi’s information, I hope that Parliament finds itself united in responding to the families of those middle school and high school children who paraded in Pisa, while their teachers and parents were at the window. Let’s avoid ambiguous words that hide intolerance growing towards everything that is not shared by a certain right”.
