The Federal Government wants to report less detailed details about German arms deliveries to Ukraine than before. District spokesman Stefan Kornelius referred to the wish of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) on Monday at the request of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU)to discuss less about individual weapons systems“. We will not comment on any plans for a delivery of Taurus marching aircraft,” said Kornelius.
The Ministry of Defense called tactical reasons for greater reluctance. There should also be information about “which weapons and ammunition we deliver,” said a spokesman. This is different with details such as pieces of certain steering aircraft. This information is “not so important for the public”, but “the Russian aggressor can draw conclusions from it”.
“”It makes no sense that the opposing side learns details“Kornelius also said. Such details should no longer be communicated as before,“ because it does not help Ukraine’s defense ability ”. The spokesman pointed out that this would also be handled similarly by other European governments.
With a view to the Taurus marching aircraft, Kornelius said that Germany supported Ukraine militarily, and this also includes “the topic of long range fire”, “that is, a marching aircraft with a certain range”. However, the Federal Government will “not disclose how this support looks in detail”.
Ukraine has long asked for the delivery of German Taurus marching aircraft. While the former Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) always rejected this with reference to a risk of escalation, Merz repeated himself openly. The spokesman for the Ministry of Defense now said that the topic was “completely overrated”. In the discussion, there is an inappropriate concentration on a certain weapon system.
Ukrainian ambassador is satisfied
The Ukrainian ambassador Oleksii Makeieev welcomed the decision of the new federal government to treat arms deliveries to Ukraine as a secret matter. “A good chess player thinks several trains. What he does not do is to predict these trains to his opponent,” said Makeieev of the German Press Agency.
“As an ambassador for Ukraine, I am inaugurated in such secrets,” he added. After visiting Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kiev, he could therefore confirm: “Germany will deliver. And we know exactly what and when. And we are satisfied.”
Criticism from the Greens
Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour (Greens) recalled that Merz had previously spoken in favor of “that Taurus will be delivered as soon as possible”. In the program “Early Start” by RTL and NTV, he criticized an evasive behavior of the new Chancellor.
Nouripour himself spoke out for Taurus deliveries again. “The weapon systems are needed in Ukraine,” he said. Therefore, he hopes “that it will soon succeed in helping Ukraine” with what it needs. ((AFP/dpa/TSP)))
