After announcing Poland: Federal Government: No direct consequences of Polish controls

The Federal Ministry of the Interior does not expect practical consequences of the announced Polish border controls for Germany. “The measures of the Polish side will now have no direct effects,” said a spokesman for the ministry. Because the Federal Government wants to continue to act in close consultation with those responsible in the neighboring country as far as border controls are concerned.

According to the Interior Ministry, the Federal Police have made around 1,300 rejections on the German-Polish land border since May 8. In every tenth case, an asylum application was expressed.

Germany has been checking since October 2023

Germany has been checking randomly on the border with Poland since October 2023 to stop irregular migration. The inpatient controls enabled the rejection of foreigners with a reinforcing lock and people without an entry permit who do not want to apply for protection.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had more intensive border controls in May after taking office. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers can now also be rejected at the border.

Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced controls on the common border on the Polish side on Monday. He made a possible end of this measure dependent on decisions by the federal government. Poland also wants to control Poland on the border with its eastern neighbor Lithuania during this period.

Federal Interior Minister emphasizes good relationship

Dobrindt said on Monday that there were no disagreements with the Polish government. With Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, he had agreed two meetings on migration issues this month. “Everything that takes place at the border takes place in a good relationship and in a vote – nothing will change at all.” He also discussed this with Siemoniak on Sunday.

Controls at the internal borders are actually not intended in the Schengen area. However, these are temporarily necessary, said Dobrindt, and until the protection of the EU external borders function better.
