Linke sees “poverty certificate”: over 1.4 million pensioners work in Germany

Work more than 1.4 million pensioners in Germany. Almost 375,000 of them are more than just a minor employment, as can be seen from data from the German Pension Insurance, which is available to the Evangelical Press Service (EPD). They had been asked by the left-wing member Dietmar Bartsch to the federal government. First, the “Editorial Network Germany” (Sunday) reported. The numbers are from December 31, 2023.

“No wonder that more and more older people continue to work”

Bartsch described the data as a “poverty certificate”. Germany is the country with the strongest economy in Europe and with its pension level is ten percentage points below the EU average. “Austria, the Netherlands or Denmark are over 80 percent, we are less than 50 percent, no wonder that more and more older people continue to work – in many cases not because they want, but because they have to,” he said.

The 67-year-old demanded a “large pension reform” based on the Austrian model. There there is employment insurance in which everyone, including MPs, civil servants and the self -employed, deposit.

For many senior citizens, however, the decisive reason not to be financial needs to go to work. The German pension insurance referred to a representative survey on the subject of old -age insurance in Germany from 2023. According to this, “fun at work and social aspects” are mentioned significantly more frequently by the pensioners surveyed than financial motives. ((EPD)))
