New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, step back. The 63-year-old drew the consequences of allegations made by several women of sexual harassment on Tuesday.
Among other things, his former chief assistant Brittany Commisso had accused him of touching her against her will. “What he did to me is a crime,” she said in a TV interview broadcast on Monday.
A few hours before the interview was broadcast, Cuomo’s close associate Melissa DeRossa resigned over allegations against her boss.
The resignation will take effect in 14 days, the Democrat announced on Tuesday. The office is then to be taken over by Vice-Governor Kathy Hochul, who would be the first woman to rule the state with more than 19 million inhabitants.
A month-long investigation found that Cuomo had sexually molested eleven women. President Joe Biden had recently asked his party colleague to resign.
The 63-year-old Cuomo had made a name for himself in particular during the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. There has been repeated speculation about a presidential candidacy. (dpa/tsp)
