The president of the EU Parliament David Sassoli will have a state funeral and will be honored by the highest Italian and European officials. The transversal emotion for the untimely death of the exponent of the Democratic Party, in the next few hours, will have Rome as the protagonist.
The first to pay homage to Sassoli were the president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the president of the council, Mario Draghi, welcomed to the mortuary in the Campidoglio, by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.
The President of the Chamber also pays tribute to the President of the European Parliament Roberto Fico and the president of the Lazio Region Nicola Zingaretti. Goffredo Bettini, former MEP of the Democratic Party and colleague of Sassoli in Brussels, also arrived at the Capitol.
In the Capitol, from 10.30, the funeral home was open to the public while the funeral will be tomorrow at noon and will see the participation, among others, of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the number one of the EU Council Charles Michel. In fact, the commemorations and messages of condolence from all over Europe for the former president of the Strasbourg Assembly did not stop. The meeting of the ambassadors of the EU member countries (Coreper) observed a minute of silence to remember him while the EU Council paid homage to him with a clip that contains the “best moments” of Sassoli as president. And from the US, the US State Department wanted to underline the “voice for democracy and human rights” that Sassoli represented while vice president Kamala Harris in a tweet recalled him as “a great European committed to the ideals of democracy”.
Tomorrow the state funeral approved by the Council of Ministers will put a seal on the emotion of the whole of Europe for the disappearance of the former face of Tg1. The funeral will be held at the Basilica of S. Maria degli Angeli, in Piazza della Repubblica, and the mass will be celebrated by the cardinal and archbishop of Bologna Matteo Zuppi.
