(ANSA) – NAPLES, FEBRUARY 28 – “I pray every day for this war to end. Such news is atrocious, it is truly the end of humanity: I ask Putin to stop making so many people suffer unjustly. I’ll never stop praying. ” The appeals for a “ceasefire” in Ukraine also come from the Naples Poggioreale prison: through his lawyer, the lawyer Fabrizio De Maio of the Lagonegro Forum, to address a prayer to the Russian president is the Colombian footballer Antony De Avila Charris, 58 years old, quite known worldwide for having taken part with the colors of his country in two world championships but also for being considered a “caliber” drug trafficker.

From the talks with his lawyer and his family, who recently went to Italy to meet him, he learned about the war that broke out between Russia and Ukraine. Antony De Avila Charris was arrested by agents of the Vicaria Mercato Commissariat in Piazza De Nicola, Porta Capuana, on 21 September 2021. Since then he has been locked up in the Poggioreale prison for a final sentence of 12 years in prison for international trafficking of narcotic substances. From his cell, where he has now been closed for several months, he seeks redemption and assures his support to the young people of the city and his country who intend to become footballers: “I want to give a dignified future to those ‘street kids’ who dream of becoming players and I’m ready to invest all my assets in what I consider potential ‘Maradona’. ” Nicknamed “el pitufo” (the smurf, ed), the former striker played in the ranks of America in Cali (where a powerful drug cartel resides, ed) but also in Argentina and the United States. With the national team he played in the USA 94 and France 98 world championships.

“I want to let my fans know – said De Avila – that I am fine and that I embrace them warmly. Even if I am in prison, I do not stop updating myself and studying about the future promises of football to grow in Italy”, he reiterated.
