There is another national team still in the running for the World Cup: it is the women’s one led by Milena Bertolini, awaited by the double confrontation with Lithuania and Switzerland.
A little more than a month before the Algarve Cup final, before projecting itself on the path towards Euro 2022, the National Women’s team is ready to return to the field for the world qualifiers. On Friday 8 April the Azzurre will make their debut at the ‘Ennio Tardini’ stadium in Parma to face Lithuania, penultimate in the group and beaten 5-0 in the first leg, while on Tuesday 12 April the awaited direct clash will take place in Thun with Switzerland, which leads the standings with three points ahead of Italy.
Two games to be won at all costs to balance the scores with the Swiss, who won 2-1 in the match held last November 26 in Palermo, and continue the run-up to first place that would allow Milena Bertolini’s team to avoid the play off and obtain direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup.
For this fundamental double commitment, the coach has decided to focus on 26 players: in the list of players called there is Sabatino, who did not wear the 90 ‘national team shirt against Israel that a year ago sanctioned the qualification for the European Championship, and together Schroffenegger, Bartoli, Filangeri, Greggi and Bonfantini also see her again. Unlike Piedmont, which has recovered from the knee injury, they will not be part of the Guagni and Giacinti group, while Serturini, positive for Covid-19, will join her companions at the end of the period of medical isolation.
On Sunday the Azzurre will meet in Coverciano and on Wednesday the transfer to Parma is expected, which is preparing to push Gama and his companions towards the sixth success in Group G.
Before the match against Lithuania, the #UnitiDagliStessiColori campaign will be relaunched at the stadium and on the social media profiles of the National Women’s team, conceived by the FIGC with the involvement of all the main players in the Italian football movement to make a common front against discrimination.
