(ANSA) – LONDON, APRIL 05 – The organizers of Wimbledon together with the British government are considering the possibility of excluding Russian and Belarusian tennis players from the next edition of the Championships. According to the tabloid Daily Mail, the All England Club has not yet made a final decision, but in the light of the war in Ukraine, no solution has been ruled out a priori. So far Russian and Belarusian tennis players from both the ATP, the WTA and the ITF have been allowed to participate in international tournaments, as long as they do so under a neutral flag and without playing the national anthem. But Wimbledon, under the pressure of Boris Johnson’s government at the forefront of sanctions against Russia, could also go further, banning the participation – among others – of the number 2 in the world, Daniil Medvedev.

“It remains a complex and sensitive issue, we are in constant dialogue with the UK government, the Lawn Tennis Association and international tennis governing bodies.

A decision will be announced before the deadline for registration in mid-May “, reads an official note from the organization. (ANSA).
